SCOLA
is a non-profit broadcasting company which
supplies authentic foreign language programming
to educational organizations for the purposes
of supporting foreign language instruction
and regional studies, and improving global
understanding. SCOLA is currently available
to Muhlenberg College student body, faculty,
and staff via internet videostream.
SCOLA’s mission is “to help the
people of the world learn more about one another;
their cultures, their languages, and their
ideologies. SCOLA emphasizes the importance
and effectiveness of modern information technology
as a tool in overcoming the barriers to global
understanding and will remain at the forefront
of its application.” SCOLA's foreign
language programming is carried on the private
cable systems through 60 participating service
areas of the Adelphia, Cox, Comcast, Time-Warner,
and other commercial cable systems in North
America.
“Insta-Class”
is a unique new tool offered by SCOLA. Each
“Insta-Lesson” consists of a
transcript of a news broadcast in the original
language and an English translation, supplemented
by vocabulary, quizzes, grammar exercises
and/or topics for discussion. The individual
weekly “Insta-Lessons” are available
to SCOLA affiliates via the SCOLA website
and are ready to use in the classroom. In
addition, SCOLA grants limited licensing
rights to include its programming in the
coursework and courseware for language training
and cultural orientation.
